Captain's Focus

Though it wasn't anything great, Capt. Stan Zagleski still managed a decent catch of fluke today in Raritan Bay from his Elaine B. II out of Bahrs in Highlands. Though hardly any other boats got out after two nasty days of east winds, the weather actually got nice after 9 a.m. Fluking wasn't as good as yesterday, but many of those caught were keepers as some anglers managed two -- and all bagged at least one. Pete Burrows of Hillside won the pool with a 5 1/2-pounder. With the weather looking much better for the weekend, Zagleski hopes to get back out in the ocean where fluking was good earlier in the week. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant hasn't been out during the day the last few days, and Capt. Dave Riback said Thursday's Magic Hours trip was a flop with very few bunkers for bait and no stripers. That will probably be a temporary situation, as there's been a lot of bunkers in the ocean most days -- and they should reappear as it clears.  Capt. Sal Cursi says Raritan Bay is still loaded with stripers and blues, and expects to be able to make his day there tomorrow. The surf was still rough and dirty when I checked it out this morning, but should be calming even before the west winds predicted for Saturday. Mickey Sweeney of Howell said he could only fish at Bay Head with a popper thrown far out and over the waves. An instant retrieve was required in order to prevent slack line from touching the water and picking up weed -- but he did mange to catch two blues even under those conditions. Joe Mellillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, noted that blues are also in Manasquan River and Point Pleasant Canal.
