Captain's Focus

After a tough day Friday, bluefishing improved today in the ocean. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported whales feeding on bunkers -- followed by blues of various sizes. At times they were jigging 8-to-12-pounders -- and then it would be blues from 5 to 5 pounds. Capt. Rob Semkewyc continues to bait big blues in Raritan Bay from his Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands. In addition to the choppers hitting bunker baits, others hit jigs fished by a few customers on the bow. There were no stripers today. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant only had some small blues jigging during the day yesterday, but after snagging bunkers to start the Magic Hours trip they ended up having one of their better striper catches at dusk and into the dark.  There was a mob scene of boats in bunker schools off Asbury Park this morning. Capt. Russ Binns couldn't do anything on bait at that time, but trolled a bass over 30 pounds for the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Tournament. Much later, around 5 p.m., he got into a flurry of 25-pound average bass on bunkers.   I got to the Point Pleasant surf this morning after sun-up, and plugging produced no results. Yet, the other angler on the beach released a blue of about 6 pounds that he caught on metal -- and he said he had caught others. Mickey Sweeney of Howell stopped by Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant after catching some blues on bunker baits in Bay Head. He said other anglers caught a few of various sizes on lures.  At Seaside Park, Betty & Nick's noted lots of blues and some bass being caught on bait along with others on metal. On Friday, Grumpy's Tackle weighed a 51-inch, 48.65-pound striped bass that Justin Swanson caught on a snag-and-drop bunker.   Capt. Ross Goldberg ran north with his Lady J TOO from Belmar to sea bass grounds that had been dead last week, but at least produced 12 keepers today even though that fishing remains very poor. The official results of last weekend's Monouth Beach Cartoppers Tournament had the Spring Lake Live Liners well ahread with 83 points, while Asbury Park Fishing Club scored 36 points -- and all other clubs were shut out. Bob Matthews had the big bass at 20 pounds. Capt. Jim McFarland reports that Tat Chiang and other dentists from Somerville fished the south end of Stellwagen Bank yesterday for limits of haddock plus a showing of cod, cusk, pollock and redfish.
