Captain's Focus

Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports anglers were into large stripers under bunker schools north of Shark River Inlet today. Largest of those weighed in was a 37-pounder by Charles Wardell of Wall.  Snagged bunkers and Stretch plugs were effective.  Tony Arcabascio of Bayville says boaters are trolling bass up to over 40 pounds off Island Beach State Park on his Tony Maja bunker spoons.  Last week it was all bluefish there, but the choppers have backed off in the 58-to-60-foot depths where bass are being trolled. A "snag-and-drop" fishery is also developing on bunker schools closer to the beach. Further north along the Shore there are lots of blues for jigging. Party boats have been reporting limits of 4-to-12-pounders the last few days. Capt. Rob Semkewyc reported another tough day of striper fishing before getting into surfacing fish that produced over 100 6-to-10-pound blues -- but not a single bass on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. Capt. Stan Zagleski finishes up his sea bass fishing on Elaine B. from Highlands tomorrow before switching to fluke on Friday's N.J. season opener. He noted that sea bass results were slower today, but almost all were keepers. Some ling were mixed in, and a few tautog were released. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park is starting to weigh-in some snag & drop stripers from boaters. Phil La Grossa weighed a 49-inch, 48.15-pounder Tuesday. There was a hot bite of blues in the surf yesterday afternoon on bunker. Keith Seiler of Toms River caught 12 up to 10 1/4 pounds. Gary Palitto beached a 9-pound black drum on clam in the park.
