Captain's Focus

The fog wasn't as dense this morning in Raritan Bay, and it turned out to be a beautiful day. I joined Mike De Marco, who drove down to Oceanic Marina in Rumson with Jason Smail from Carmel, N.Y. to fish with his brother, David De Marco of Lincroft, and Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall on the De Marco's Boston Whaler 28. Live bunkers fished down the bay produced three large stripers, including the first for Smail, before the marks disappeared in the same areas that produced lots of action yesterday for Grazioso. After a lot of looking around for bass we could chunk or cast to, we ended up trolling Stretch plugs on the Belford flats for a steady pick of bass to provide those the crew wanted for food -- and released the last before leaving them biting. Capt. Rob Semkewyc reported a slow start on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, but ended up with a good catch of both keeper and short stripers in the back of the bay. Capt. Stan Zagleski had the opposite report from his Elaine B. out of Highlands as he did well on the morning ebb before the bite shut off later. Tommy Hollywood Jr. of Staten Island won the pool with a 16-pound striper. The Golden Eagle from Belmar managed to snag just a few bunkers, but each bait was hit by a striper up to 25 pounds -- presumably in the ocean.  Bruce Vitale of Piscataway and Lou Truppi from Bushkill Township, Pa. joined four other anglers on Russian Roulette from Point Pleasant in fishing two offshore wrecks that produced 28 cod, mostly in the 5-to-10-pound class, plus two similar pollock. The pool winner was a 24-pound cod, and there was another of about 20 pounds. Most party boats will be sailing on Mother's Day, but patrons should check first to be sure. There was also some life in the surf. Hugh Mura broke the ice this season by fishing a clam early in the morning at Sandy Hook to beach a 31-inch striper. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported bluefish up to 6 pounds in the surf there and in Island Beach State Park. Steven Domanski weighed in a 9.95-pound chopper. Gary Politto weighed a 16.7-pound bass Friday after it hit a clam. At Betty & Nick's, Andrew Karp said he was casting a T-ZER in the park before dawn when he hooked a 5 1/4-pound weakfish. Frank Gallegher weighed the shop's largest striper of the season as well as his personal record with a 19-pounder on clam
