Captain's Focus

With continuing good weather, striped bass fishing in Raritan Bay held up today for most anglers -- with more keepers in the mix. Capt. Joe Massa had to work hard for bunkers from his My Three Sons out of Morgan Marina, but he was able to put those live baits to good use on 34-to-36-inch stripers in the back of the bay as he and a friend limited with four bass while releasing a few more. Massa said other boaters were catching bass on clams or by trolling Stretch plugs. The initial report from Capt. Robbie Barradale on Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands his morning was good as three bass had been boated by 8:45. Mike Koblan of Wall sent along a report from his friends of a clamming catch of stripers on Friday aboard the Mad Gaffer from Baker's Marina On The Bay in Highlands. Rich and Bryan Dziuban plus George Doll from Matawan caught 25 bass that included four keepers. It was a long time coming, but the first striper was weighed Friday at Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park to win a $150 gift certificate. Bud Schuyeder caught the 28-incher, that weighed 8 1/2 pounds, on a clam. There's also some good news from the Delaware River, where Capt. Jim Freda of Shore Catch  enjoyed his first shad fishing this week. Bob Good of Hillsborough put Freda and his son Tommy plus Augie Scafidi of Somerset into 58 shad up to 5.8 pounds. They fished at anchor by the Lambertville Bridge. I did the same thing a few years ago, and can attest that it's literally "stupid" fishing when the run is on as shad hook themselves in the strong current on tiny flutter spoons rigged on downriggers.
