Captain's Focus

The improvement in water temperatures was reflected in better flounder fishing over the weekend. Bob Matthews reported flounder were caught in fair quantities from both boats and bulkheads in Shark River. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant,  said flounder mostly over the 12-inch minimum were not only caught at both ends of Point Pleasant Canal, but also in the Canal. itself. Bloodworms were the best bait, and some small blackfish also hit them in the Canal while at least six small stripers from 18 to 22 inches were released on that bait at the Manasquan River end of the canal.  Melillo said the water temperature was up to 44 degrees. Capt. Howard Bogan said he cancelled last Saturday's cod trip with the Jamaica from Brielle due to the weather. However, Sunday's mid-range wreck trip worked out well for both cod and pollock. Jose Lozano used a jig and teaser to boat three pollock up to the pool-winning 29-pounder plus three cod. Bogan noted that about 60 percent of the cod and pollock were caught on jigs and teasers rather than clams. A few ling and blackfish were hooked. Bogan will be holding off on the striper search in order to fish the mid-range wrecks at 4 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  The Ocean Explorer from Belmar found Mud Hole waters to still be very cold. Mostly short cod plus ling were caught over the weekend along with a few tog. They won't be fishing tomorrow due to the weather forecast, but should be able to get out on Wednesday.
