Captain's Focus

Capt. Stan Zagleski has been shut down by high winds and sub-freezing temperatures, but resumes daily blackfishing Thursday with his Elaine B. from Bahrs in Highlands. Since there's been no pressure on his spots, Zagleski expects good action in the mild weather forecast for the next few days. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, says the party boats there are doing very well with blackfish whenever spiny dogfish don't interfere too much. The striped bass bite in the Bay Head to Point Pleasant surf took a nosedive today despite ideal conditions. Loons were diving well within casting range, and showing off the sand eels they were catching. The swell was moderate, and the water clear -- but I only heard of one small bass caught in the area. I cast both morning and evening without a hit. Jerry Lasko said he had a couple of hits before I got there in the morning, and I watched him hook a fish for a split second. He returned later in the morning as the bars uncovered, and then again from 2:30 to dusk without getting another hit. One angler took the water temperature at 42 degrees in the morning and 41 in the afternoon.
