Captain's Focus

The west wind did its job of reducing the big swell, and the surf cleared up pretty quickly from Saturday's storm. I hooked a small bass on a Run-Off Sand eel jig on my first cast this morning at Bay Head, but my second cast produced a massive wind knot. After retreating to Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant to get re-rigged. I returned to the beach to add six more releases on a slim Tsunami Sand Eel rigged as a teaser.  Five more were added in late afternoon on that teaser plus the 6-inch Tsunami Swim Eel, but those fish turned off as the full moon came up. None of them went over 21 inches, but it was still fun fishing for mid-December. There was a similar report of short bass in the surf from the shops in Seaside Park. The Jamaica from Brielle sails to the far offshore wrecks for jumbo sea bass and porgies at 11 p.m., and will do the same Wednesday night.  Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
