There was no change reported today, as short stripers dominated both for surfcasters and boaters.
The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported lots of action, but few keeper bass.
Capt. Rob Semkewyc spent a lot of time looking for bigger bass with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, but said there were no keepers among the many shorts. He heard there were some bigger bass in federal waters, but the Coast Guard is patrolling the 3-mile line.
Very small bass are being caught in the surf. Joe Meillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant said his regulars did well with them Friday morning in the west breeze, but a 24-incher is a big one now. Only a few scattered bass were caught this morning in the northeast wind and cold. Conditions were fine by late afternoon with a light east wind, but I didn't find anything at Bay Head.
Capt. Joe Massa fished for blackfish Friday at the Apple Pie Grounds with a friend out of Belmar. They found plenty of legal tog, but only one 8-pounder.
Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park hasn't had a striper weigh-in in days, but Kyren Dooley put a 26-inch blackfish on the scale that weighed 13 pounds.
