Captain's Focus

Capt. Hans Kaspersetz, who runs his Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands, was billfishing in Guatemala this week with his Team Priority as they finished second in the Presidential Tournament -- just 100 points behind the winner. Strong northwest winds have blown in following the storm, and are forecast to continue blowing hard into Thanksgiving. That's good news for surfcasters, but not for boaters. The Jamaica from Brielle has cancelled their Thanksgiving trip, and other boats are likely to do the same. Be sure to check with skippers before coming down. Friday looks good, and the weekend should be fishable. Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reports the storm wasn't as bad as forecast there, and they had a report of a 20-pound striper being caught this morning at the Pocket in the park. They will be open early on Thanksgiving. Striper fishing has been good near Barnegat Inlet when wind conditions make it possible. Some days it's been north and rough, rather than the predicted northwest that provides some lee. Capt. Steve Purul, of Reel Fantasea at Barnegat reports limit bass catches when conditions are right. Capt. Bob De Santis, of Skipjack II at Waretown, reported five out of 30 bass trolled Monday were keepers. The Russo Plumbing party on Tuesday trolled and live-baited for 13 keepers and five shorts. A 30-pounder was hooked on a Tony Maja yellow bunker spoon.
