Captain's Focus

Charlie Parker of Oceanport took a beating fishing alone in a 17-foot boat today, but that tog pro boated a trophy that weighed 10.8 pounds at The Tackle Box in Hazlet -- which should put him in good position to win today's Jersey Coast Shark Angler's Blackfish Tournament. Many were called, but few striper fishermen were chosen on a fishable day before very strong northwest winds are forecasted for tomorrow. Capt. Russ Binns of Toms River ran his Mar-Lin from Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat, but his crew only managed to jig one striper and one blue. Trolling Stretch plugs had also worked last weekend, but not today. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported an improvement in jigging over Friday's poor results, but they were mostly short stripers. They will not be sailing Sunday due to the forecast -- and also won't be doing a Thanksgiving trip. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands got into lots of mostly short stripers until they got lockjaw around 11:30.The high hook jigged 30, but only one was a keeper. The Thanksgiving trip will be from 6:30 to11:30 a.m. Surfcasters at Island Beach State Park found better action than John Bushell expected. He reported from Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park that there was a morning blitz on swimming plugs at the Governor's House. Dave Chambers of Seaside Heights fished his local beach for two bass to 12 pounds , and reported that he saw 25 others caught there during a mini-blitz. Grumpy's Tacle in Seaside Park weighed in only 19 bass up to Jeff Crabtree's 36.5-inch, 18.3-pounder on a bunker chunk. Most hit plugs, metal or clams. Joe Melillo had several weigh-ins from Friday at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant. Bob Klements of that town had an 11-pound striper while Jerry Lasko added a14 1/4-pounder. Angelo Venazia of Brick had one of the largest recent surf bass with a 26 3/4-pounder. Ric Harrow from Howell weighed a 15 1/2-pounder, and Joe Fuller from Toms River beached a 16-pound bass. Hank Wright of Lakewood had a 17 1/4-poumder. Nothing much went on this morning in the local surf, but a couple of bass were hooked at Point Pleasant. Bob Correll of Bay Head fished his local surf late in the afternoon to catch a hickory shad, but watched young Ryan McCabe catch his first striper ever -- a 20-incher on metal. George Horvath caught a 16-inch fluke on an Ava 17 jig in Manasquan Inlet on Friday -- and released it with an American Littoral Association tag. He's tagged 7602 fish in N.J. since 1985, and has had 236 returns from 11 states.
