Captain's Focus

Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina feels that diminished surfcasting results the last two days at Island Beach State Park may have been due to the switch to east winds -- and he expects the forecasted return to west winds on Friday will rev up the hot striper bite in the suds once again. Capt. Howard Bogan said the early striper bite to the south on his Jamaica from Brielle died out by 9 a.m. this morning. After that they had good bird life, but only an occasional fish. They leave at 6:30 a.m. on Friday for the early bite. Mark Roy fished today on Capt. Keith Burnett's 38-foot charter boat along with Greg Summers, Pat Faccia, Jack Rosol, and Tom Headle from Warren as they trolled umbrella rigs and drifted live spot a half-mile north of Barnegat Inlet to catch their limit from among 24 bass. Roy said almost all were in the 26-to-33-inch class. There were adult bunker there, but the bass wouldn't hit them. Lots of boats, including some from Point Pleasant, were on the scene. At Barnegat, Captains Dave DeGennaro of Hi-Flier and Steve Purul of Reel Fantasea report fine striper fishing by a variety of methods -- as does Capt. Bob De Santis of Skipjack II from Waretown. Tom O'Connor of South Amboy fished his local beach this morning to catch stripers of 36 and 38 inches while losing an even bigger one on plugs handmade by the late Gus Geant -- a local fishing legend.
