Captain's Focus

Though stripers were still caught in the Ocean County surf, the hard northeast blow put a big dent in the action. Those who started early had the best shot. There was a huge line of cars backed up trying to enter Island Beach State Park, but some of those who managed to find elbow room caught bass. After having 66 weigh-ins on Tuesday, Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park "only" had 38 today by many more anglers as of the last time I looked. Most of the fish were again in the teens, with the largest being a 39-inch.18.95-pounder by Beau Foster on a T-Hex. I gave it a brief try in Lavallette with John Green of Brick, but conditions went downhill rapidly as the northeaster started howling. We didn't have a hit before leaving early, but did see one bass caught. Capt. Bobby Bogan ended up with a good day on his Gambler from Point Pleasant though it was slow in the morning. Most fares had keeper bass, and there were also some shorts and medium blues. The Jamaica from Brielle also had a slow start before finishing with bass to 17 pounds plus blues. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands had a keeper bass or two for most along with shorts and blues.
