Captain's Focus

Surfcasters were in their glory today with the northwest wind behind their backs and lots of bass to be caught. I had my best day ever of blind casting after it started out exactly the opposite while fishing with John Green of Brick. He drove onto his local beach and saw birds working in the surf. It looked like we might have blitz fishing, but there were no swirls -- and we never had a touch. Green got a call from a friend in Seaside Park who had caught a couple of keepers, so we took the ride. There were no birds and no evident bait, but I was rewarded with a 29 1/2-inch release on 6-inch Tsunami Swim Eel. Green later moved a bit north to identical looking water with no birds or bait, but we started getting hits right away. I added five more legal bass there on the eel during the next hour plus a 27-inch short. The last release almost dumped my Shimano Bait Runner and was by far the largest at 40 1/2 inches. This same sort of fishing was going on over a broad area. John Bushell, at Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reported that "The island is on fire", and Grumpy's Tackle in that town had over 50 weigh-ins up to a 39-inch, 20.9-pounder. Bob Correll of Bay Head fished his local beach at dawn and saw the same thing we observed at Brick Beach -- lots of birds on sand eels, but nothing being caught. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported seeing bass on top and having good readings, but the bite was poor. They ended up with some blues and a couple of short bass. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant managed some bass limits plus shorts and blues. The Fishermen was the only boat out of Atlantic Highlands, and Capt. Ron Santee managed a decent catch of bass and blues when the ebb tide started. The birds were up in nasty conditions as the northwest wind blew even harder as the day went on. The Fishermen won't be sailing the next several days.
