Captain's Focus

While the weather forecast kept most boaters tied to the dock, John Green of Brick and some other surfcasters caught mostly legal stripers this morning from along much of the Ocean County Shore. In Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle weighed in 25 stripers up to a 21.3-pounder by Jason Braitsch on a T-Hex, though most hit Avas. Betty & Nick's had weigh-ins up to Mike Lenz's 22 1/4-pounder on bunker at Lavellette. Capt. Rob Semkowyc was disappointed that he didn't have enough customers to sail with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands as striper jigging improved on Sunday after a poor Saturday. Sunday's pool bass was a 27 1/2-pounder. The Jamaica from Brielle also saw an improvement on Sunday when birds were spotted on the way back to the north in the fog and 10 to 12 keeper bass were jigged each drift along with some shorts and blues. A 23-pound bass took the pool. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, said surfcasting has been spotty, but Steve Spadafino of Hamilton weighed a 17-pound bass which he caught from the beach at Belmar in the dark on a needlefish.
