Captain's Focus

4/30/14: Four days in a row, with the seas being fairly calm, except for a swell on Sat and some blustery winds in the am, and a northerly current which carried even a 10 oz sinker to the stern (had to use at least 12 oz) and a few doggies if you had any bait up high, and throwing beautiful keeper sea bass back, I would say it was a pretty good four days. Ha! The keeper codfish we had were all between 22 and 24 inches with quite a few throwbacks. But the big news was Jim Berdini of Waretown, NJ caught and released a huge 10.6-lb blackfish! We set the hook slightly through his skin and sent him down slowly until he started to fight, then Jim tugged to release the fish, and everyone was happy, even the fish, and Jim won the pool. The other pool winners were Dave Mitchell of Harvey Cedars, NJ with a 4.5-lb cod and Jules Majeski of Hamilton, NJ, who won with a nice 7-lb blackfish and Alex Oliszewski of Waretown, NJ won with a 5-lb blackfish. We had a nice group of guys from the Washington Twp. area onboard Sat, that was supposed to be the rough day but it turned out OK. Thanks again for sailing with us, John, we had a great time with your group. Also troop #172 Boy Scouts out of Bucks County sailed with us on Sunday. These kids wanted to catch fish! No cell phones, just fishing! It was so nice to have them onboard, thanks to Mike and Tim for organizing. We had a few fishermen with limits on Monday, of course that's easier to do when there is only a few guys. But now for the bad news, it's over! Again, just when fishing starts to get good, water temp is climbing, the fish are starting to chew, they shut us down! Thank you for the shortest blackfish season we have ever had. Sorry, but the boat will continue to sail on May 19, every day for sea bass. Let's return then and get some fish for the freezer! Sea you at sea. Gina
