Captain's Focus

Sorry for the several days with no blog. My computer died on Friday, and the last rites were given to it as I shop for another. Unfortunately, there was no one in the office at that time that could get into my blog to explain the problem I fished both Friday and Saturday with Mark Roy of Warren on his 31-foot Century from Raritan Marina to enjoy the best December popping action I've ever experienced. On Saturday, with Fred Cienfrone of Bogota along, we never even bothered to jig as the surface action was good all day with huge blues and mostly small stripers on big pencil poppers — though I did plug one 28-incher among them. The round-bellied blues were spitting our sea herring that the birds didn't get first.  Unfortunately, it was a different story when I ran up there on Sunday with Dr. Dave Catalane and his friend Ed from Pittsburgh on his Boston Whaler 28 from Manasquan. The birds were flying as expected, but few swirls were seen — and the birds suddenly disappeared. We managed to troll some big blues and a small striper before a brief shot of jigging blues, but it was a big disappointment despite the wonderful weather. We left early so Catalane could fly back to Pittsburg, but Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter at Atlantic Highlands said it didn't get any better. We made a brief stop just north of Shark River on a few birds where I jigged two school bass on a Tsunami 6-inch Shad.  Surf fishing has been generally quiet. I tried Sea Girt this morning to no avail in a continuing rough surf from an offshore swell. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park also didn't have much to report, though  Dennis Symonds weighed in three blues in the 10-pound class that hit bunker this morning. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports blackfishing remained very good for most, with even a kayak angler bringing in a limit up to 12 pounds. Whitelegger crabs are the best bet. Winter flounder fishing remains hot from the docks. Marty Westerfield of Wall had both a 3-and-4-pounder for his limit. The Jamaica from Brielle has added far offshore wreck trips on Dec. 16 and 20. That fishing was very good Friday, with many sea bass limits plus a 30-pound cod by Jack Karg of Little Egg Harbor. Nick Mills of Wall had a 22-pound pollock. Saturday was slower, but there were still some sea bass limits plus an 11-pound pollock and a 9-pound cod. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
