Captain's Focus

Capt. Ron Santee said the southwest wind blew to over 30 knots, but it didn't make any difference to the stripers and blues off Sandy Hook. Santee said there were four areas of birds when he first got out there with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, and bass dominated before some big blues were added. The pool bass was 31 inches. The water temperature remains at 52 to 54 degrees, so this fishing could last a lot longer. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported a a fast start with blues and then got into stripers. Jack Schlocklin ended up catching five bass and four blues. Rough surf has stained the water at Sea Girt, and I didn't see a sign of life there this morning. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, had a similar report in that area. Tom Fote of Toms River just missed a blitz of bass in Island Beach State Park this morning.  Frank Huza of Aberdeen arrived at Seaside on Monday morning to watch two 12-to-14-pound blues being landed on metal, but that action was over. He stayed and released a fat 25-inch striper on a Gibbs Minnow. The Jamaica II from Brielle had fine bottom fishing over the weekend for big sea bass and porgies -- plus a total of over 100 cod. Billy Watson of Trenton won Saturday's  pool with a 19-pound cod.
