Captain's Focus

Sunday's abrupt disappearance of striped bass and bluefish off the Highlands Bridge area proved to be a very temporary event as those fish have been crushing jigs again the last two days. Capt. Rob Semkowyc said it was all stripers when he started today, but bluefish horned in eventually -- and it was a mix of the two species after that as there were five keeper stripers plus bonus bass taken on the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. That boat won't be sailing on Thursday due to the rainy weather report, but will be back at it Friday. Capt. Dave Riback started finding fish at Shrewsbury Rocks, and continued to the north as anglers on his Queen Mary from Point Pleasant all caught their bonus bass plus all the blues they wanted. Six keepers in the 28-to-29-inch class were added. Riback is running a limited schedule while taking advantage of the good weather days. Therefore, he won't be sailing Thursday, but is figuring on Friday and Sunday. Surfcasters finally got a shot at those big blues moving in from the areas they've been abundant in. Two surfcasters spotted birds working over the beach at Sea Bright this morning, and followed them down to Long Branch. It was all big blues for those anglers. Big blues also dominated further south. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had several weigh-ins of blues in the 10-pound class on bunker, but the largest at 13.35 pounds hit a popper for Tom Duckett. The big swell that had made surfcasting difficult at Sea Girt was finally down this morning as I released a 17 1/2-inch "end of the season" striper on a Mambo Minnow and lost two others.
