Captain's Focus

Anglers got a taste of what January was like the last two winters this morning -- and I didn't talk to anyone that liked it. Striped bass also seemed to prefer the warmer breezes that have prevailed this winter as I didn't hear of any caught by the regulars at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, including one who had started in Island Beach State Park.  I cast blind in the Normandy Beach surf for a short period before leaving the below-freezing cold and strong north wind. There was a classic rough, but fishable surf -- but no sign of bait. There were some anglers braving the cold when I checked Bay Head and Point Pleasant in the afternoon, but no word of any bass or the herring that have been holding them. Unfortunately, it's supposed to be even colder and windier Tuesday. A milder trend is predicted to start Wednesday. Capt. Bobby Bogan didn't have enough customers this morning to sail with his Gambler from Point Pleasant. However, he did very well with stripers and some blues on Saturday, when there were clouds of birds to the south, working from the beach out to the three-mile line. The fish were spread out on Sunday, but 10 keeper bass plus shorts were caught. Bogan said the bass were feeding on herring, and most were caught Saturday on Crocs, while shad were the best bet on Sunday. The Gambler will sail daily if enough fares show up. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, said those interested in pickling herring can load up with all they want on Sabicki rigs in Shark River Inlet. The New York Boat Show opens at the Convention Center on Jan. 6, and continues through the 10th. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday;and 10 to 6 on Sunday. Adult admission is $15, while children 15 and under are admitted free.
