Captain's Focus

The nicest March weather in years didn't do us much good in terms of fish, and I don't expect any improvement in that from the northeaster that started Sunday evening -- along with rain. Yet, the weather looks mild and fishable by Wednesday and Thursday. The Ocean Exporer from Belmar had poor offshore fishing on Sunday, but anglers were treated to calm weather and the sight of a seal gobbling up bergalls that were being thrown back. That boat will not be sailing Monday due to the wind forecast. Capt. Joe Massa ran his My Three Sons from Morgan Marina through Raritan Bay and down to Monmouth Beach on Saturday. He saw loads of bunkers and gannets, but hardly anything that could be a fish mark after netting all the bunkers he wanted at the bridge before leaving Morgan Creek. He fished live bunkers, and did have one pick-up that was verified by marks on the bait. It was calm and mild until he tried to set up for clamming -- when a wind against tide situation ended that brief attempt.  Massa went out again Sunday afternoon, and ran about 15 miles around both sides of the bay to see only half of the bait and birds of the day before. He was able to give clamming a good try in perfect conditions off the bay's southern shore-- but there were no bites where he found just a few marks. The water temperature averaged 47.5 degrees. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park has had some reports of short back bay stripers on small plugs.
