Captain's Focus

We've been getting clobbered by wind from every direction, but anglers actually seem to have a window of opportunity Wednesday morning as small craft warnings for the north winds experienced today come down at 2 a.m. -- to be followed by a light northeast, before a southeaster starting in the afternoon. That should be perfect for chasing stripers in Raritan Bay, or even for offshore fishing before the winds change -- though it will be very cold before the sun gets high in the sky. Capt. Vinnie Vetere hasn't started running his Katfish Carters out of Great Kills as yet, but he's very happy with the fishing vacation he enjoyed at Zancudo Lodge in Costa Rica. There were plenty of sailfish plus the full range of inshore species such as roosterfish -- just as I enjoyed decades ago when I did a Salt Water Sportsman article there.
