Captain's Focus

Blackfish have become active in Point Pleasant Canal. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, reported two Brick anglers got into them Thursday on sand worms. James Barry caught eight that included two legal tog, and Bob Longo had one keeper among 11. Melillo has heard of some small stripers being caught in the surf on small lures and teasers. There might be a window of opportunity Saturday morning in Raritan Bay in a lighter southeast wind before it switches to a howling northwester in the afternoon. The southeast is bad news for surfcasters as Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reported there was a big sea there this morning. That northwester should knock the sea down on Sunday, but it will also result in colder temperatures.  Tom Paglioroli reported a great shore fishing opportunity at Ohio Road (Pebble Beach) on Great Bay -- where big black drum are being caught a week before they showed up last spring.
