Captain's Focus

Striped bass fishing was good Friday morning in Raritan Bay for Capt. Vinnie Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills. He said it took an hour of looking before the bass were located, but then trolling produced steady 20-ounders on the first day of the N.Y. season. They also caught a 47-incher with a 27-inch girth that weighed 41 pounds. There were lots of marks until the tide died at 9 a.m. Small craft advisories have been posted for Saturday due to northeast winds gusting over mph. That was enough to cause the Big Jamaica from Brielle to cancel Saturday's striper trip. They did fish Thursday, but found nothing in the ocean until the end of the trip near the inlet. A 14-pound bass was jigged, and a couple of large bass lost -- with just two shorts released. Since the NE wind is predicted to blow into Sunday, a decision will be made on that trip tomorrow.  Monday looks very good with light west winds. The Tackle Box in Hazlet weighed a 40-pound bass trolled Thursday in the Reach on a bunker spoon by Harry Mesbay of Robbinsville. Frank Huza of Aberdeen reported fishing the top of the tide Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from shore at Keyport without a hit.
