Captain's Focus

Dave Lilly of Hazlet hasn't lost the touch. The word he got from other skippers Saturday afternoon is that Raritan Bay stripers weren't responding to trolling as they had been lately. Yet, Lilly had steady action with 35-to-43-inch bass on the large Tony Maja bunker spoon in chartreuse. Ironically, that was the only color that worked even as he rotated a second rod with every color aboard without getting a hit. Just the day before, Capt. John Kolias had started his charter season with Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands as the Bob Kagan party enjoyed that boat's best opener in 13 years by limiting with four bass over 20 pounds plus six releases from 7:45 to 10 a.m. The biggest bass was 43 inches and 36 pounds. The water temperature was 49 degrees, and Kolias said it was all trolling as bait and jigging wasn't working that day. Ocean jigging hasn't produced the last two days for the Golden Eagle from Belmar, though they were surprised to find bluefish swirling on the surface, As is usually the case this early, those blues wouldn't hit. Then they got into some mackerel -- a very unusual circumstance to find those species together. A few blues hit mackerel baits, but were difficult to boat. The Jamaica from Brielle cancelled Saturday's trip in advance due to the NE forecast, but will be sailing Sunday and Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported some anglers have been catching short stripers on clam in the surf.
