Dave Perruso, of Palmer Township, Pa. reports shad fishing busted wide open over the weekend in the Easton/Phillipsburg area of the Delaware River. Perruso said " Rusty Balls of South Whitehall Township had 82 on Saturday and Dave Hill of Hellertown had 77. I was out with Bob Mayberry of Port Murry NJ, one of our sponsors, and caught 57 yesterday afternoon. Had 4 shad on at one time! The Bi-State Shad Fishing Contest runs this Thursday through Sunday with the weigh station at the Phillipsburg boat ramp. First place is worth $5,000 this year with total payout about $15,000! Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports bluefish averaging 4 pounds, but including some big ones, are already being caught in Barnegat Bay – and Betty & Nick's added that they're also in the inlet. Chuck Many of Annandale finally has his Ty Man in the water at Gateway Marina in Highlands, and reported at 1 a.m. that he and Nellie Greer of Bethlehem, Pa. had already caught a dozen bass up to a 24-pounder – plus a bluefish. I thought that might have been the first blue from the Raritan Bay area, but Mark Roy called to report he's been chunking in the bay for everal days with little striper action -- though three blues have been caught from his Release Me out of Raritan Bay Marina. After two days with no stripers, the Golden Eagle from Belmar jigged a few up to a 23-pounder on Sunday. Capt. Howard Bogan said he was reading stripers all day on Sunday with his Jamaica from Brielle, but they never really turned on. The most successful angler was Denise Forney of Lacaster, Pa., who boated a 28-pound pool winner on a silver Croc, and limited. The other bass hit gold Crocs. The Jamaica will sail daily for stripers at 7:30 a.m. The Elaine B. from Highlands got started by striper fishing both days over the weekend. A few keepers were caught both days, though Capt. Stan Zagleski said the reports he was receiving were largely negative.
