Captain's Focus

Bluefishing is breaking open in many areas. I left a hot bite casting into Manasquan Inlet to head home and write this -- but the rain may have had something to do with that. I caught a couple of blues in the morning on poppers, but 5-to-10-pounders were hitting even better on both poppers and metal toward dusk. Surprisingly, every blue I saw caught was released. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle weighed two blues that John Walters caught on bunker of 36 inches and 14.2 pounds plus 34 inches and 12.85 pounds. Betty & Nick's noted that there was a bluefish blitz the previous evening in Island Beach State Park. The Jamaica will be sailing from Brielle Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. for stripers. Elaine B. from Bahrs in Highlands didn't get out for blackfish today as the weather forecast scared off most anglers, but they'll be trying again on Wednesday as the tog season heads to an end this weekend. The wind is predicted to shift to NE on Wednesday, but no more than with gusts to 20 mph.
