John Peterson of Easton, Pa. won last week's 6th annual Bi-State Shad Fishing Contest on the Delaware River at Easton/Phillipsburg. The winning shad weighed 5.836 pounds, and was worth $6,000 as a last minute surge in entries resulted in a field of 350 anglers. Eric Fistler has built up that contest from just 75 anglers six years ago. Dave Perruso of Palmer Township, Pa. reported that Bob Leciston of Alpha, N.J. and he caught over 100 shad in four days -- just not the right one. The strong southwest wind forecast resulted in no boat reports today, and there are small craft warnings up again to late Tuesday night. Capt. Stan Zagleski reports his first weekend of blackfishing on Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands was hurt by strong currents. Most of the tog caught were shorts. They also released the year's first few sea bass reported on Sunday, when some ling were added and Bob Williamson of Whippany won the pool with a cod. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant didn't find any stripers or blues on their first weekend of the season, but a pick of large mackerel at least bloodied the deck. Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reported Bob Brecht weighed in a 14 1/2-pound striper that he caught Sunday night in Island Beach State Park along with three shorts. Capt. Vinnie Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills reported limits of striped bass Saturday on live baits -- and then by trolling Mo-Jos. Johnny Blaire and friends caught 17 bass up to 30 pounds on Sunday.
