Captain's Focus

The lack of blues in Point Pleasant Canal and at Manasquan Inlet on Monday seemed to indicate that the big blues were finally moving out, but there was a hopeful sign Tuesday morning upriver in the Manasquan. After not being able to raise a single blue on a pencil popper the previous evening, my first morning cast with the same lure was blasted by a 32-inch blue that came completely out of the water to pounce on it.. After that, I raised blues on almost every cast during the short period before the ebbing current died. My sixth, and last, blue hit just before complete slack. Once again the blues were big, with my largest release measuring 37 inches -- my longest of the season by a quarter-inch. Everyone else was doing the same thing until the current died, but there was no such life late in the afternoon as only one blue was caught at that time. Capt. Vinny Vetere, of Katfish Charters in Great Kills, trolled Monday in the ocean from Monmouth Beach to Deal to catch eight large stripers up to 37 pounds on TGT Rattle Spoons. He stayed in the bay on Tuesday for a steady bite of stripers from 8 to 30 pounds on bunker chunks. Bluefish cooperated in the ocean on Tuesday. The Golden Eagle from Belmar said it was good up to mid-day with catches of two to eight  that mostly hit bait. Miss Belmar Princess fished to the north on anchor as both jigs and bait produced 4-to-14-pounders though it slowed later in the trip. Ava 47 jigs and shad lures worked best. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports more blues in the surf are hitting lures. A 29-inch, 12.2-pound striper hit a clam bait. Betty & Nick's Tackle reported Rocco Volpe and Mike Memoli had two bass to 15 pounds . The Island Beach State Park surf has been producing from Area 21 south to the inlet, and also at 2 Bit Road. Crabbing is picking up in the bay. Matt from Capt. Jim's Tackle in Cape May, reported black drum fishing has started. Clams are hard to come by, and it's advisable to reserve what you need. He further noted that  "Striper fishing was pretty good last week in the Delaware Bay. The guys we spoke to who did the best were tucked in tight to the beach sometimes in 4 or 5 feet of water.  From the Ferry Jetty all the way up into the Cove good reports are coming in just about every day. John Mansfield of Moorestown NJ weighed in a 38-lb bass Friday he caught off of Reed's Beach. They caught a total of 5 fish on his boat that day.The surf produced some fish this week. It wasn't on-fire as conditions weren't great with the weather and water clarity not what it should be, but we did see some nice bass caught along the North Cape May Beach. Missy Alcorn a local girl caught her 1st bass of the year -- an 18-lb. fish on bunker Saturday. We are also starting to get more reports from Cape May Point. Art Delancy of North Philadelphia weighed in a 21-lb. bass from the Point on Saturday that he caught on bunker. The weather is supposed to get much better this week, and we expect the fishing will too."
