Sea bass fishing got off to a good start Monday. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had mostly limits on Monday, and did almost as well today. As usual, the fish weren't on every spot -- but were biting when located.The Golden Eagle from that port had another great day of bluefishing on both jigs and topwaters. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports Steve Germann of Freehold trolled a 46-pound striper off Long Branch. Fluking has been better in the river than offshore. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant got in a magic hours trip on Sunday. Though it was tough getting live bunkers, they ended up catching a few big stripers up to a 45-pounder. The Thursday magic hours trip is sold out. The Jamaica from Brielle has scheduled a livelineing trip for June 1 from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. It's limited to 28, and the cost is $80. Vinnie Vetere didn't have a charter on his Katfish from Great Kills this morning, but took a shot to the east with his crew and had a catch of big stripers on live bait. Capt. Dave DeGennaro finally got out of Barnegat Inlet on his Friday afternoon trip with Hi Flier from Barnegat. Trolling in 50 feet off Island Beach State Park with a Tony Maja white #4 bunker spoon, Gary Paulino of Absecon boated his personal record striper of 38 pounds. A 30-pounder was also caught before the party finished up catching big blues on poppers in the bay. DeGennaro trolled off the park for two hours Saturday morning without a hit. It was too rough to go offshore on Sunday morning, but there were blues to be cast to in the bay. An attempt at clamming stripers at the mouth of Oyster Creek Channel was unproductive. That afternoon started slowly with the bay blues before they were located on the east side for two hours of blitz casting for choppers up to a 16-pounder. Bob Danyluk boated a 20-pound striper on clam at Oyster Creek on Monday before blitz popping for blues on the east side. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports there are still lots of big blues in the surf, and a couple of stripers were caught on bait.
