Captain's Focus

Walter Fisher reports that "The Staten Island Tuna Club, a recognized 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, is hosting a charity fishing tournament called the Armed Forces Invitational, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting catastrophically injured services members. We are proud to be supporting the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation's Building For America's Bravest program. Together, we can help give brave service members a smart home and thank them for sacrificing so much for us. The event will be held on Friday, June 5, 2015 out of Atlantis Marina in Staten Island, New York. This tournament will entail over 100 of Staten Island's most skilled fishing captains and anglers teaming up with US Armed Forces veterans in a competitive striped bass fishing tournament." There's even the possibility of winning $50,000 for the largest 50-pund striper. A few "fifties" have been caught this year, and it wouldn't be surprising to see another caught with all those Staten Island pros on the water. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant came close on Tuesday when a 45-pounder was boated during a trip that otherwise featured jigging blues. The Monday evening livelining trip didn't work out when bunker that had been abundant an hour earlier disappeared before live baits could be snagged. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports charter boats are still bringing in lots of big stripers. He noted that some big bluefish came into the river to surprise light tackle anglers. The Golden Eagle didn't get out today, and cancelled the Magic Hours trip due to the weather. Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking was good again today on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands once the drift got right. Jack Decker of Blairstown took the pool with a 5 1/8-pounder. Capt. Rob Semkewyc got a good shot of blues on jigs from his Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands this morning, and later added a 30-pound striper on a 9-inch shad lure. Due to the "iffy" weather forecast for Thursday (strong NW winds), he advises anglers to call before coming down. He's also taking reservations for a livelining trip at 6:30 a.m. Friday that's limited to 20 fares. Allen Riley of South Plainfield didn't have much hope when he fished the Sea Bright surf Tuesday morning, but his bunker baits were attacked by skates and sea robins. He did see a couple of 2-pound blues caught by other anglers. Riley noted that Sea Bright has instituted parking fees. Jon Falkowski of Linden fished the Sandy Hook surf this morning, and was happy to catch a 23-inch bluefish on a Kroc. He also caught two big sea robins, and saw other anglers catch a blue or two. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills had caught a striper on sand fleas two days in a row at Spring Lake, but that streak came to an end this morning. I tried Sea Girt at the same time, and found so little water on the beach that it was practically unfishable without waders. That will be even worse in the morning with a northwest wind blowing water off the beach.
