Captain's Focus

Northwest winds are ideal for the Magic Hours striper bite along the Shore, but when it switches to the south, as it did this evening, that's usually bad news for anglers. The blog is late tonight because I gave it a good try with Bob Correll of Bay Head on his Boston Whaler. We had no trouble snagging bunkers on the way north, and were even able to snag a few more in the fishing area off Long Branch, but nothing came up in them -- and we never saw a bass caught before heading back to Manasquan Inlet. Fishing conditions were decent, as the south wind was only about 15 mph. Phillip Sciortino, at The Tackle Box in Hazlet, weighed in one of this season's largest fluke so far when Bill Reilly of South Amboy brought in a 12-pound doormat that he hooked on a killie in Raritan Reach.  1 Attached Images Fluking was good today in Raritan Bay. Capt. Stan Zagleski, of Elaine  II at Bahrs in Highlands, said it slowed only when a couple of ships went through the Reach, as there were a few limits and many fares with three to four -keepers. John Cangialosi of North Bergen took the pool with a 7 /16-pound fluke. Capt. Ron Santee reported that Ron, Sr. had the day's first limit on the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands. Some other limits plus fluke up to 7 1/2 and 8 pounds were boated. Capt. Vinny Vetere reported limit striper catches on his Katfish Charters from Great Kills. Nick Honachefsky said surf fluking in the Lavallette area has picked up as he's catching fluke to 20 inches on Gulp with a bucktail jig. I fished Point Pleasant Canal in the morning, and managed a 17-inch fluke on a Gulp Shrimp, though only a few other fluke and small blues were caught while I was there. Dan Esposito managed a keeper of about 19 inches on Gulp. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills finally found some life in Shark River on Monday afternoon as he caught six small blues while casting a Chug Bug and a Zoom jig. Joe Melillo , at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, reports good fluking in Manasquan River plus blowfish at the northern end of Barnegat Bay. Crabbing is excellent throughout the area. Recent weigh-ins include a 34 1/2-pound boat-caught striper by Jeff Dyer of Brick; a 14 3/8-pound striper on clam from the local surf by Bob Longo of Brick;  an 11 9/16-pound surf striper on metal by Jeff Aldridge of Howell; and a 13 3/16-pound plugged bass by Bob Marconi from Lakewood.
