Captain's Focus

Frank Dee was sweating it out at Crystal Point Marina in Point Pleasant as makos kept going up on the scales, but he really didn't have much to worry about as the 301-pounder his Lockout from Brielle brought in Saturday wasn't challenged for the lead in Mako Mania. On the other hand, the rest of the board was being regularly scrambled during another fine day for offshore fishing.  Tin Knocker was one of the last boats to weigh-in, but their 271-pound mako jumped into second place -- ahead of the 251-pounder weighed Saturday on Black Gold. Tradition had earlier weighed a 184-pounder for third, but they got pushed back to fourth. Katlin from Crystal Point weighed a 173-pounder for fifth, only to be knocked out by a pound when Caroli was the last boat back after losing steering. I'll have more about Mako Mania later in the week. The Gambler from Point Pleasant has been into decent fluking, even if shorts dominate. Donna Brown won a recent pool with an 8.5-pounder. Capt. Bobby Bogan is working mussel beds, hills and bumps. Capt. Stan Zagleski had another good day in Raritan Reach as his first drift with Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands lasted nearly three hours. The bite shut off when a big ship came through, and the drift was lost later in the trip.Yet, there were a few limits - and Kevin Buselmeier of Staten Island won the pool with a 6 1/8-pounder. Capt. Rob Semkewyc reports his morning trips with the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands have been better than those in the afternoon the last two days. Pool winners have been running from 5 to 7.5 pounds. The Jamaica from Brielle has been finding blues of various sizes for jigging during the day, but Saturday night bluefishing hasn't developed yet this season. As a result, they will switch to Magic Hours striper fishing every day except Monday at 3:30 p.m. by reservation. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant got into 2-to-3-pound blues jigging on Saturday -- plus their first black drum in years.  Magic hours trips the last two nights produced a few stripers. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills finally caught his first school striper of the year in Shark River this morning. The 21-incher hit a Chug Bug, as did a couple of cocktail blues.
