There were some big dogfish off Sandy Hook, along with sea robins and skates-- and they cast to a few small blues off Leonardo. There was good news in the Sea Bright surf, where anglers finally got good shots at little tunny.

Today's hard south wind made for tough conditions when I sailed at 2 p. m. with Chuck Many of Annandale on his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands. There was lots of bait in the surf when I cast at Bay Head this morning, but there didn't seem to be anything on them, Just before leaving I landed a 16 1 4-inch striper that hit Run-Off's new rainfish metal.

Nick Honachefsky has had shots at them in his local surf at various times of day around Normandy Beach, but they are chasing very small bait and wouldn't hit his Deadly Dick or a Williamson jig. Allen Riley of South Plainfield checked the surf from Sandy Hook to Monmouth Beach at mid-morning and didn't see any signs of little tunny.

The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported better fishing than on Saturday, with lots of blues up to 18 pounds on bait plus a high hook on tunny of 15 plus a few bonito. Both Bruce Casagrande of Trenton and Frank Pogue had fluke limits up to 5 pounds last week.

The Jamaica from Brielle got into the big blues during their Friday night trip as choppers up to 18 pounds were recorded along with only a few chub mackerel. The Golden Eagle from Belmar was catching 1-pound blues on Friday, but today had 10-to-14-pounders that hit mostly on bait -- plus a few little tunny.

The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands got out Thursday and found a few keeper fluke, but no shorts as all the bait readings were hanging above the roiled bottom. A boater I talked to at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant this morning noted that small blues were hitting fluke rigs being reeled up in 80-foot depths to the north yesterday.

That strange tropical storm did little physical damage at the Shore other than moving some replenished sand around, but put a big financial dent in the pockets of merchants who missed out on the last big holiday weekend of the summer, and for boaters who wasted both time and money getting their boats pulled when they could have been fishing every day in the bays and rivers. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills hasn't raised a striper or blue from shore in Shark River since days before the storm, but finally saw lots of mullet and peanut bunker Thursday morning -- a sign that they're getting ready to move down the beach.

The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant had planned to sail today, but will do so tomorrow. Adam La Rosa of the Canyon Runner fleet at Point Pleasant summed up canyon prospects in the following e-mail As Good As It Gets Limits of Yellowfin on the Chunk!

What passed for a tropical storm resulted in a very rough ocean, but didn't interfere with Capt. Dave De Gennaro's weakfishing in Barnegat Bay at all as he had good results from Thursday through Saturday on his Hi Flier from Barnegat. I've been making a brief attempt at the slack with light tackle and sandworms, but the volume of juvenile sea bass is hard to get past with soft baits.

Many people missed out on a beautiful Labor Day with sun and moderate winds due to the forecast yesterday evening that included gusts to 40 mph last night followed by gusts to 36 mph today. Hopefully this storm won't turn things off in the canyons and it may actually be good for the tuna fishing.
