Capt. John Kolias, of Reel Fun at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, couldn't find the volume of large fluke Sunday he got into the previous day, but the Justn Vogali party was happy with the 7- and 8-pound fluke boated in deep waters. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into some blues early on Run-Off Hammered jigs, and added some fluke to 5 pounds and sea bass in the afternoon.
However, they didn't bite and a switch to bottom fishing produced some fluke up to 7 pounds plus sea bass. Capt. John Kolias wasn't in the SWABC top three, but had a great trip for Barry Paull of that club as the charter on Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands caught 33 fluke which included 16 keepers from 4 to 6 pounds.
Capt. Though 242 boats fished Thursday in the White Marlin Open, I could only find one change in the Leaderboard -- and a minor one at that. 5-pound bigeye boated on Rich Kosztu's Hubris took over first in tuna from Magic Moment and a potential 400,000. There was also a change in dolphin as Sea Wolf brought in a 36-pounder to pull ahead of the 34.
That 233-pounder is far ahead of the field, and could be worth 400,000. There were 249 boats out of the 329-boat field fishing Tuesday during the second straight perfect canyon day.
The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported a very good day of variety bottom fishing with a boat limit of sea bass (two per man) up to 4 pounds plus some ling to 3 pounds, and a few fluke. Matt Slobodjian reports from Jim's Tackle in Cape May as follows The fluke fishing remains about the same, a lot of small fish and a few nice ones.
28-pound doormat in the Hudson River to win at the Jersey City port in Liberty Landing Marina -- where the only other fluke close to doormat size finished second. Sandy Hook Name Hometown Entry Weight Length 1st Moskal, Robert Scotch Plains, NJ 136 5.
You won't see John De Bona's name in the results, as we experienced poor fishing at several spots from Ambrose to Jamaica Bay We fished with David Schnall of Montville on his 28-foot Regulator from Gateway Marina in Highlands, along with Rich Dunn of Brick and Austin Perelli from Brooklyn. Very few fluke were coming into the Gateway Marina weigh-in, but the one at Jersey City had a late spurt with good fluke catches coming in from nearby areas in Hudson River -- which also produced an early doormat.
