They had some great sailfishing with eight dorados (dolphin) and 10 sail releases one day, before opting for bottom fishing the following day -- when 65 groupers from small fritos (2-6-pounders) were taken plus some larger ones in the teens -- and a bunch of the ocean whitefish that look like the small tilefish.

There wasn't enough space in last week's column for the conclusion of last year's review -- which follows The pattern of hot striper fishing between the channels in the fall continued each morning as anglers enjoyed great sport jigging and casting among swirling bass while those seeking meat could limit out quickly by trolling rigs on wire line. By the time I made my last boat trip aboard Sheri Berri on Dec. 4 it was all small shorts for Joe Blaze of Brielle and Dave Cheli from Spring Lake until my 50th bass turned out to be a 37-incher on the same Tsunami 6-inch Swim Eel that was attracting the schoolies.

The status quo in Option 1 for fluke was most popular, along with Option 2 that works with it to again provide the possibility of receiving extra quota from states not using all of that allocated to them. With a five-fish bag there could be the same 17 1 2-inch minimum as last year with a season of 94 days or the state could opt for 18 inches that would provide 120 days or 18 1 2 inches for 184 days.

The word at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant was that the surf temperature was down to 35 degrees. That doesn't bode well for a repeat of last January's surf action with school stripers -- but you never know unless you try it.

Concluding the 2013 review from my fishing log Though there were sand eels along the Shore last fall, there was no extended red hot boat and surf blitz such as occurred two years ago at Island Beach State Park.
