    The nicest March weather in years didn't do us much good in terms of fish, and I don't expect any improvement in that from the northeaster that started Sunday evening -- along with rain. Massa went out again Sunday afternoon, and ran about 15 miles around both sides of the bay to see only half of the bait and birds of the day before.

    The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported calm seas and mild temperatures today while a lively bottom produced a few keeper cod plus some ling and small pollock as well as the usual bergalls and dogfish. The Tackle Box in Hazlet reports the water temperature got up to 52 degrees Friday at Keansburg, but they're still only hearing about short stripers on clams despite such an abundance of bunkers that anglers feel as if they're getting hits.

    Raritan Bay is full of bunkers, and I got a phone message about three larger stripers that were chunked Thursday night from shore off Great Kills. Frank Huza of Aberdeen fished from shore at Keyport that night, and just missed on a keeper with a 27. 25-incher.

    Phil Sciortino reported from the Tackle Box in Hazlet that the water temperature had climbed to 50 degrees at Union Beach, and school stripers are being caught there as well as from Cliffwood Beach and the other usual spring sod bank areas around the bay. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reminds anglers that the Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament is set for May 15, with early entries up to April 15 eligible for a reduced adult entry plus drawings for various prizes.

    El Nino has provided us with the nicest possible March weather, but few anglers seem to be taking advantage of it. Capt. Howard Bogan has room on Saturday's 1 a. m. limited cod trip of the Jamaica from Brielle.

    Adam La Rosa reports his Canyon Runner Fleet at Point Pleasant had another record NY Seminar,with more attendees than ever before. http www. operationrestoredwarrior. org La Rosa noted 5 was donated from every ticket sold and then we raffled off Canyon Runner tackle raising 5,150 - which I promised to match out of my own pockets if the NY guys beat the AC guys in money raised at the raffle - which they did!

    Some keeper cod and pollock plus scattered ling were caught, and there was good life on the bottom with bergalls, congers and dogfish. The Ocean Explorer plans to fish for cod every day.

    Today's snow and strong northeast wind provided a grim picture for the weekend, but the north winds are predicted to drop down during Saturday -- and calm down for Sunday, though a big swell could be a problem. As per yesterday's blog, there will be fishing flea markets on Saturday (the Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County at the American Legion in Rochelle Park) -- and Sunday with Berkeley Striper Club at Toms River North Intermediate School.
