Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman s Wharf Fishing Report October 13, 2009 Pretty strange week of fishing here at the Wharf this past week with the unprecedented closure of the Black Sea Bass at the beginning of the week I found myself scrambling for what to do next to try and put a few fish in the boat. We caught a few nice Flounders and some Croakers on the drift, we had some birds working on two pound Blues catching a bunch of them one day, and when we fished for the Tog even though it was disappointing, at times we saw plenty of action with Triggerfish and Porgies, and we did finally by the end of the week see a handful of mostly small and measurable Tog actually keeping a few decent sized fish.

Word of this closure struck late last week when my all-day trips were catching primarily Sea Bass along with a nice variety of other species including Triggerfish and Flounder. Not only has the fishing been good it had actually gotten better and we were starting to see a good number of anglers daily land double digit catches of decent sized Bass along with several other species of fish that have been staging around the artificial reef structures and shipwrecks for the fall run.

Even though Mother Nature has continued with more of her cruel tricks we have managed to have some pretty good fall fishing over the past week and the Sea Bass as well as a nice variety of other fish have been biting good and filling up our buckets. Every trip last week we saw fairly decent catches with mostly Sea Bass along with a bonus catch of Trigger Fish, Snapper Blues, Flounder, and a few Porgies, we even caught a few Croakers over the weekend.

Hence the change of program the first couple of days that the wind took a break we gave drifting an honest effort and we did manage to catch a few nice Flounder but just not enough. Over the past seven days our Sea Bass fishing has just gotten better and better and the numbers of keepers have been increasing just about every trip.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman s Wharf Fishing Report September 16, 2009 Here we are pushing into the third week of September and instead of talking about those fabulous Fall variety catches of fish we would typically be seeing at this time of year, the main topic around the docks is when will the wind ever stop! After the second tropical system things got tough again however the fish bounced back and not only were we seeing good numbers of Flounder again but the Sea Bass were also starting to move around and we had been seeing a few more of them in the mix each trip we made.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman s Wharf Fishing Report September 9, 2009 The weather has certainly not been doing us any favors over the past couple of weeks and during what would typically be one of our best few weeks of catching nice variety catches of fish we sit tied at the dock again for a few days due to yet another coastal wind maker. When the conditions are right we will still be able see good numbers of Flounder but unless we can start adding up the nice keepers the way we were a few weeks ago or the conditions are such that we are better off anchoring, it is likely that more of our time will be spent fishing in areas where the variety catch will ultimately put more fish in the coolers.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman s Wharf Fishing Report September 2, 2009 Our fishing bounced back this past week after last week s tough performance of a couple of days following the passing of Hurricane Bill. While the swells did screw up the fishing for Saturday s trip, unlike the passing of last weeks Bill, the fish were biting again much quicker after this storm and we bounced back nicely on Sunday.

We had sort of a double whammy last week, we started the week out pretty decent with good Flounder action but as the week progressed, between the afternoon southerlies and the new moon perigee tides making drifting conditions and holding bottom less than favorable, our catch and our keeper to throwback ratio started to go down the tubes. The fishing over the few days before and after the passing of Bill however have left no doubt for anglers it just hasn't been too special, there were no big numbers of keeper Fluke landed for me just before and just after the passing of Hurricane Bill.

While mostly all of our Full-Day trips have been in the Ocean fishing over the old grounds lately, I fully anticipate being able to catch Flounder for several more weeks both in the Ocean as well as up in, and around, the mouth of the Delaware Bay. I will continue running daily with the Full Day trips departing at 7 00 a. m. and returning to the docks around 4 00 p. m. Flounder will be the main target as long as we continue to see the numbers of fish we have been seeing.

My last week of fishing with the all day trips has been typical Flounder fishing. We haven t even begun to see the migration of fish that occurs in our area during the fall and when this begins to happen, I fully anticipate some excellent days on the water with fish catching action and a nice variety of fish.
