Finally some seasonable weather and some good fishing to reportSince my last report water temperatures really have not risen all that much it seems to have been just enough to have made the Tog become a little more active and for the fish to bite a little bit more consistent for us over the past few days.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report April 15th, 2014 For a few weeks now we have been trying to run a limited schedule with our regular Full Day trips sailing around the weekends, and for just as long we have been plagued with virtually every weather scenario that you can possibly imagine in our region and we have battled much colder than normal water temperatures in the Delaware Bay and along the Atlantic coast. It would be a couple more weeks before we even thought about taking the ropes off of the boat.

After a long and painful winter with some of the coldest enduring weather I have seen since I was a kid, I think that I can finally say we are starting to think more seriously about our fishing season here at Fisherman's Wharf and these pictures that I am posting from back in January and February around Lewes are a thing of the past! Our fishing Season so far since the beginning of the New Year has been limited to just a couple long range trips fishing for the Tilefish and only one regular full-day trip that we made a couple weeks ago which basically just turned into a boat ride.

There is no doubt that we have encountered some tough times this fall with our Tog fishing and with the continuous battering that Mother Nature seems to want to dish out to us but we have most certainly seen some good Tog trips on the inshore wrecks and artificial reefs, the Sea Bass fishing has been very consistent whenever the weather has allowed us to get offshore where the Bass are right now, and finally after all the reports of the big Stripers being landed up north these fish have showed up in our region in full force and it is looking as if we will continue to see good action with the Tog, Bass as well as the Stripers right up until the end of the year now. For the last few weeks the best Striper fishing had been mostly in the upper reaches of the Delaware Bay or well up the coastline off of New York and New Jersey however now the migratory fish that have been moving down the Atlantic coastline are right outside of our front door in force and are willing to take a live Eel or live Spot.

To say that the Tog fishing has improved wouldn't be very hard to do after some of the bum trips we have seen over the past few weeks however we have definitely seen an improvement and we have also seen a few of the biggest fish so far this fall along with some very active short action the few days we have fished since my last report. In the last couple of weeks there has certainly been a lot of stripers landed both big and small however most of these fish have been caught up in the Delaware Bay by boats anchoring up and fishing with fresh bunker or clam for bait.

While fisherman aboard the Bass trip were busy winding in Sea Bass from the deeper water and filling up their coolers, we were experiencing fishing that resembled watching paint dry or grass grow trying to entice a Tog to bite a piece of crab in the hard running muddy current. This same scenario is playing out again today 11 06 in what was forecasted to be the nicest day of the week there we sat once again waiting for the Tog to begin to bite while Capt. H and his group of eager anglers were offshore beaming up the Bass two and three at a time and once again catching limits and filling up the coolers with the tasty Sea Bass.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Oct. 30th, 2013 We have had some pretty chilly weather and some fairly calm seas since my last report and as a result the water temperatures have been on the decline and the Tautog have started to turn on with some of the best fishing we have seen on these fish since the spring season. Provided that we are allowed to fish for the Bass after the beginning of the New Year that will be the time to anticipate fishing the much deeper water in the 190 to 350 foot range.

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Oct. 22nd, 2013 After a solid eight days tied to the docks while a pesky low pressure center swirled near gale force northeast winds right into the heart of our coast we finally resumed our daily fishing a week ago yesterday and we have been out every day since, catching and cussing at the ever so elusive Tautog. Fishing for Tog after a storm of the caliber we witnessed is certainly a roll of the dice just to begin with and I was happy to see any biting fish at all.

With summer like weather and some hazy hot and humid days out on the water it seems like our Sea Bass fishing got a little worse everyday instead of better. We drifted the rocky bottoms of the old grounds and found them covered with small Bass, Croakers and Sea Trout giving us some constant rod bending action with a little variety of fish and a decent catch by days end for those that kept the bigger Croakers.
  • 2013-10-01 Fish Wharf Lewes

It's official our drifting days for specifically Flounders are pretty much done now and all of our efforts will be for the Sea Bass and the Tautog or whatever else may be willing to bite our hooks fishing primarily at anchor over structure. As far as how many Sea Bass we will be seeing in the next couple of weeks is anybodies guess, so far it does not seem like there are the big numbers of these fish around like we sometimes see at this time of the year but we will certainly be catching some just maybe not the freezer packer days of the early 2000's.
