Sorry for the delay in getting the blog out, but I had to stick it out to the last minute at Capt. Bill's Landing in Point Pleasant as boats were backed up to weigh in mako sharks which turned out to be mostly just over the 66-inch minimum length set by the contests. The only larger mako was brought in earlier by Thor, and that 276-pounder took over the top spot in both Mako Mania and Mako Fever. As noted in last night's blog, Water Proof took the first day lead in Mako Mania at 218 pounds, but most boaters held back for Sunday's great forecast. Yet, the biggest makos were caught in the rougher weather. Water Proof finished second in Mako Mania, and The Right Place was pushed back to third at 208 pounds. The only late weigh-in that changed things Sunday was the 181-pound mako on Sea Questor for fourth. Trophy Hunter II moved down to fifth with their 175-pounder, and Impossible was sixth at 160 pounds.  I'll have more about the mako tournaments in the blog and Friday;s Star-Ledger column. There were mostly poor reports inshore from area party boats on Sunday. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported no blues, and settled for some sea bass action even though those fish had to be released. The Raritan Bay fluke fleet also had picky fishing. The Mimi IV from Point Pleasant will be sailing open this week for bottom fishing on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 732 370-8019 to reserve a spot. Vinny D'Anton of Wall hit it right this morning in his local surf as he released three small stripers that hit his Chug Bug before switching over to sand fleas for just one bite -- though that was from a striper just over 37 inches. Though that bass had good girth and fought very well, it had a distorted mouth and was covered with red spots. D'Anton released that bass. Frank Conover released a 28-inch bass on the crabs, but that was all the action on the beach.
