The northeast wind blew in this morning as expected. The start of a northeaster in the fall often results in a surf blitz, but that wasn't the case at Spring Lake this morning even though there had been good action with stripers the previous morning. I felt fortunate to release two bass of 26 and 26 1/2 inches that hit a Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper in the wash. Though rough, the surf was fishable, and some mullet were observed, but those were the only bass I saw caught.  Unfortunately, the surf is likely to become dirty as the pounding continues. Yet, the northeaster may improve striper fishing in the long run. Leif Pettersen had an experience similar to mine while fly fishing at Deal as his only bass, a 27.5-incher, hit a white snake fly in the wash -- which is where the bait was. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, reported lots of small blues were caught on both plugs and metal at Normandy Beach. Blackfishing remains good on green crabs in protected Point Pleasant Canal. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported some blues and stripers are being caught, and a little tunny was taken from the jetty yesterday. Most boats cancelled today, and probably all will stay in tomorrow. The Golden Eagle from Belmar has cancelled for Thursday and Friday, while the Cock Robin from Point Pleasant won't sail tomorrow. The Jamaica from Brielle got in their 31-hour canyon trip from Tuesday to Wednesday and finally found a yellowfin tuna bite thanks to a report from Capt. Phil Dulanie of the Canyon Runner who was aboard a private boat into the tuna.
