The nicest March weather in years didn't do us much good in terms of fish, and I don't expect any improvement in that from the northeaster that started Sunday evening -- along with rain. Massa went out again Sunday afternoon, and ran about 15 miles around both sides of the bay to see only half of the bait and birds of the day before.
3-12-16 Flat calm and warm again offshore today,,plenty of life on the bottom as well. We had some nice codfish come to the net,,Pauly nailed the pool fish on a jigging world jig,Dale had two nice keeper Codfish, and a handful of other keepers as well scattered around the boat. Lots of bait around,,saw some mackerel come as well. .So nothing great but we caught some fish, few ling and small pollock as well. Come on down and take a shot at a nice Codfish!!
The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported calm seas and mild temperatures today while a lively bottom produced a few keeper cod plus some ling and small pollock as well as the usual bergalls and dogfish. The Tackle Box in Hazlet reports the water temperature got up to 52 degrees Friday at Keansburg, but they're still only hearing about short stripers on clams despite such an abundance of bunkers that anglers feel as if they're getting hits.
Raritan Bay is full of bunkers, and I got a phone message about three larger stripers that were chunked Thursday night from shore off Great Kills. Frank Huza of Aberdeen fished from shore at Keyport that night, and just missed on a keeper with a 27. 25-incher.
Phil Sciortino reported from the Tackle Box in Hazlet that the water temperature had climbed to 50 degrees at Union Beach, and school stripers are being caught there as well as from Cliffwood Beach and the other usual spring sod bank areas around the bay. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reminds anglers that the Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament is set for May 15, with early entries up to April 15 eligible for a reduced adult entry plus drawings for various prizes.
So we will be sailing Saturday and Sunday 3 12 and 3 13 at 7AM to 4PM for Ling COD and anything else that may bite. JanuaryFebruaryMarchAprilMayJuneJulyAugustSeptemberOctoberNovemberDecember201620152014Comments List all reports
