There was no repeat of the striper bite in the Spring Lake surf this morning, though Vinnie D'Anton of Wall released one of about 28 inches on a Chug Bug after raising two others in a very large swell, Mike Monte, a Shore native who has long run a tackle shop in Nantucket, raised three bass before I arrived -- and everything went dead.

    A lot of time was lost to northeasters, but the long term benefit of getting the fall striped bass season underway may make up for that. Boaters have been trolling some bass at Shrewsbury Rocks, and the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands has been doing well on its night trip on live eels.

    Miss Belmar Princess reported seven to eight jumbo blues from 8 to 18 pounds on at a time this morning. The Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands had good porgy fishing on the N. Y. side today, but won't be sailing Sunday as there's no place to hide from strong northeast winds.

    Thursday night's striper trip was very good for the second night in a row, with bass up to 20 pounds on live eels. had some computer problems last night which resulted in my first draft being published instead of the revised one that included info about the jumbo blues, the night striper bite, and a report from Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall who fished Thursday aboard Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club.

    When the wind backed off late in the day, Many took a ride out into the bay where the water temperature had dropped to 69 degrees. The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council meeting in Galloway discussed the Special Management Zone proposal put forth by the NJ DEP that would allow only hook and line or spear fishing on our reefs in federal waters -- which includes all but the Sandy Hook and Axel Carlsen reefs.

    Few party boats sailed today, and some have cancelled for Thursday, but the Golden Eagle from Belmar reported all you want jumbo blues from 10 to 18 pounds on Run-Off Hammered jigs and bait. Miss Belmar Princess ran east of Shark River Inlet to jig the same size jumbos.

    The New Jersey Outdoor Alliance provided the following important notice This October 5th, 2016 NJOA's continuing efforts to bring New Jersey's offshore artificial reefs under the protection of a Special Management Zone (SMZ) enters formal review by the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (MAFMC). To summarize, the SMZ Monitoring Team's recommendation is the SMZ Monitoring Team recommends that the Council designate all 13 New Jersey's artificial reefs located in the EEZ as SMZs.
