Captain's Focus

Capt. Ryan Bogan reports Saturday afternoon fluking on Jamaica II from Brielle produced some limits of fluke and sea bass, with many fluke in the 3-to-5-pound class. Frank Pogue made seven trips during the week and limited on fluke every time. Young Park of Howell won the June Monthly Pool to collect $582 plus a year of free fishing on Jamaica II.  Capt. Ron Santee reported a 10-pound doormat fluke was caught today on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands. John Zipcos also boated an 8 3/16-pound fluke. Young Anthony Scalzo, Jr. not only caught his first fluke on Saturday, but also won the pool with a 6.5-pounder. Santee said fluking was good today once he had a steady drift. Capt. Stan Zagleski found better fluking today with less wind. Almost everyone on Elaine B. II from Bahrs n Highlands had a keeper, and catches ranged up to four, which is what John Vanderstad of Pompton Lakes had -- including the 5 1/8-pound pool winner. Elaine B. sails again on Monday at 6 a.m. so patrons can get in early enough to beat the traffic home. Surfcasting this morning at Spring Lake was disappointing as conditions were much better with the large swell reduced -- but I didn't raise a thing to my popper. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills stuck around after I left and released a 24-inch striper on a Chug Bug.
