Captain's Focus

The wind forecast for today was a modest one, but the reality when I drove down to the Bay Head surf this morning was a flag standing straight out -- which indicates at least 15 mph. After two days of just a medium swell, the surf was somewhat rough for casting a light jig and Gulp to fluke, and I later found from an angler who made a few casts that it was also full of weed. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a tough day with bluefish, and attributed that to the rough sea. Those they jigged were in the 2-to-5-pound class. Capt. Ron Santee found a big swell outside the bay, where he had done well with fluke the day before on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands. Shorts dominated within Raritan Bay for his charter with John Louca of JL Mechanical, whose daughter Stephanie won the pool with an 8-pound fluke. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant went offshore to catch lots of chub mackerel and some sea bass plus two sharks up to five feet.  Capt. Dave Riback cancelled the afternoon family fun trip because it wouldn't be any fun out there. Prowler V from Atlantic Highlands starts Sunday evening wreck trips from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. with Capt. Jim Revelli. They hope the forecast of 10-to-15 mph west winds holds for that fishing. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, said fluking in Shark River has been good the last few days. A 6 1/2-pounder was caught from one of his rental boats.
