Captain's Focus

The Shore bluefish fleet got into fast fishing today with the chub mackerel that have been providing most of their catches lately. The Golden Eagle from Belmar actually got into all 1-to-2-pound blues during the first hour on Run-Off hammered jigs and teasers before the mackerel took over. Their Saturday afternoon fun trip produced good fluke action with lots of shorts plus some keepers up to 5 pounds and sea bass. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported very good mackerel fishing today. They have cancelled the Monday and Monday afternoon trips. The Jamaica from Brielle had good mackerel fishing Saturday along with a few blues, ling and sea bass -- and even several dolphin up to a 10-pounder. Several sharks were hooked, but the mackerel kept biting as they were fought. Capt. Stan Zagleski of Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands said fluking was good today, and there was only a 15-minute shower. Joe Stefanelli of Maplewood won the pool with 5 1/4-pound fluke. Capt. Ron Santee reported the wind against tide worked in his favor today by slowing a fast drift on the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands. There were three limits and a 7-pound pool winning fluke. Bob Correll of Bay Head spent Saturday afternoon on the beach with his family, but brought along his rod which came in handy when cocktail blues blitzed there. Correll caught doubleheaders that were spitting up small sand eels -- a good sign for the fall fishery. The Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club White Marlin Invitational ended Saturday evening, but no results have been posted.
