Captain's Focus

The Jamaica II from Brielle reported "spectacular" sea bass fishing on the last two extended trips -- the 10-hour Thursday and Saturday's 14-hour. In addition to many sea bass limits there were some two-flounder limits and even porgy limits plus big blues. For instance, Wes Shourt of Manahawkin had a bass limit along with a flounder limit, and 38 scup. After there was good fishing off the Bradley Beach area on Friday, the fleet of boats heading north from Manasquan Inlet looked the the D-Day invasion. I fished with Joe Reap on his Reaper II from Manasquan, along with Bob Correll and Joe Hall. We marked fish on the way north, but didn't try dropping shad lures to them in order to locate bunkers -- but never saw a flip all the way to Shrewsbury Rocks and back again. We ended up well south off Mantoloking before marking bunker schools, but there were no stripers to eat them there. Looking around further offshore, Reap found some birds picking on rainfish -- and we saw schools of big fish under them, Though we only got a few swirls on poppers at first, Reap kept working the schools and we caught five in the 20-pound class -- two on live bunkers and three on pencil poppers. It wasn't easy, and we might have done much better if one of the party didn't have to get in while the sun was still high in the sky. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant found a few stripers jigging to the north, and got into jumbo blues off Asbury Park. The Golden Eagle from Belmar complained about the boat traffic, but managed "Some bass and a bunch of jumbo blues". At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen said " I never had to work so hard in all my life to catch some fish."  Boats were driving the fish down, but he did get in one good drift that produced keepers. Santee noted that the Friday night trip had a drift problem with wind against tide, but when that ended there were 35 keepers taken.  Capt. Rob Semkewyc found bass on top right away with his Sea Hunter, but other boats put them down -- and the fish moved fast after that, He only got in two good drifts that produced several keepers. Surfcasting reports were poor. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported a slow pick, but noted that the water temperature is still relatively high at 60 degrees.
