Captain's Focus

Striped bass fishing couldn't have been any better in many areas on Wednesday for both surfcasters and boaters. Hopefully that will be the case again on Thanksgiving morning. Many party boat are running shortened trips that will get anglers back in time for the turkey. Check with your favorite skipper -- and get down early. I fished with Chuck Many of Annandale on his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands along with Nellie Greer of Bethlehem, Pa. as we ended up releasing 109 stripers that included only a few shorts. Most were at least slots, and probably at least half were over 28 inches. Many released a bass of about 22 pounds while jigging during the cold and windy morning off Sandy Hook, and weighed a 25-pounder from that area in just 22 feet late in the afternoon on a Tsunami Shad. Almost all the fish were caught on 6-inch Tsunami Shads, the weighted version for jigging and the standard version for casting in shallower waters. I did catch three bass and an 18-pound blue on Tactical Angers Pencil Poppers. We released seven big blues in addition to the stripers. Surfcasters were into bass at many beaches down to Long Branch. Capt. Rob Semkewyc is looking forward to his Thanksgiving trip after limiting out on slots and releasing others from his Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands. They were just two short of a boat limit of keepers, and the pool winner weighed 27.5 pounds.  The Golden Eagle from Belmar isn't sailing on Thanksgiving, but reported good striper fishing on swim shads and Run-Off Hammer jigs. Miss Belmar Princess had two dozen keeper bass by noon for only 25 fares. They'll be fishing Thanksgiving from 7 to 1. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported almost a limit of slot stripers. They sail on Thanksgiving from 6 a.m. to noon. Bob Correll of Bay Head said there was hot surf fishing for stripers in the morning at Spring Lake, but he didn't see anything caught there in the evening. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported the Tuesday surf bite turned on late in the morning as many bass up to 38 inches were weighed in. Matt Slobodjian at Jim's Tackle in Cape May reports "We are finally starting to see some stripers showing up. Charles Alding of Ardmore Pa. weighed in a nice bass Saturday a 38.8-pounder he caught in the rips. Mark Brown was fishing on the "Gold Rush" Saturday trolling the Wildwood Lump and boated a 49-pounder. There are not big numbers of fish here yet, but it's a start. There was a good afternoon bite after the traffic thinned out off of Atlantic City and Brigantine Saturday on the troll. Too many boats running through the school really puts off the bite. We have also seen a few keeper bass coming from the surf on bait and lures as well. The fish came from the beachfront in town and Cape May Point. We have also seen a few speckled trout caught around the rock piles on the beachfront. The tog are still biting on the rocks, and the best bite on the boats seems to be close to the beach. The Wildwood Reef and Cape May Reef are also holding fish. The sea bass bite remains very good on the 20 fathom line and out. And we've had a few good reports at Del. Reef Site #11 from guys just drift fishing the reef for sea bass. We did have a few boats running to the offshore rock pile for the bigger fish but I didn't get any feedback on how they did.
