Captain's Focus

The sad news of Capt. John M. Connell's passing at just 48 was received today. Connell, the long-time skipper of the party boat Capt. John from Keyport, died Sunday at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. Born in Staten Island, Connell had been living in Keport and had a great reputation as a fluke specialist. He was cremated, but a memorial service will be held Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is holding their winter meeting at the Westin Alexandria in Virginia this week. The Tautog and American Eel boards were meeting today, while the Shad & River Herring Board is on at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow -- followed by the Menhaden Board at 2:15. Most important is the Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Board meeting at 8 a.m. Feb. 2.  The Ocean Explorer and Big Mohawk from Belmar won't be fishing for blackfish tomorrow, but are hoping to get out Thursday.
