Captain's Focus

A report from the Tackle Box in Hazlet arrived too late for the Friday column with news of stripers hitting clams as Raritan Bay waters have warmed up after falling to 34 degrees earlier in the week. The Tackle Box reported Bobby Madej of Iselin caught six bass Thursday on clams, including a keeper. Dennis Sipplak from Manalapan hooked 12 up to a 29-incher. Clams are the bait, but there are also bunkers in the bay with gannets diving on them. Today's rain may result in another drop in water temperature, but the bite should resume quickly if it slows down at all. The Golden Eagle resumes sailing this weekend from Belmar with Capt. Jim O'Grady, formerly of the Cock Robin, added to the Golden Eagle skippers. Saturday's weather looks tough, but Sunday and Monday should be fine for 7:30 a.m. trips targeting mackerel and cod. They did get out last Saturday, but waters were too cold at that time and fishing was poor.
